Average block size in bytes per day. Larger blocks indicate more transaction data, especially from shielded transactions which include zero-knowledge proofs. Block size trends reflect network usage and the relative mix of transparent vs shielded activity.
Avg Block Size was 85 KB on 2026-09-27, the last full day of data. That is 217.0% higher than 28 days ago, when it was 27 KB.
🔗 permalink ⇆ compareAverage bytes per block per day. On a transparent chain that tracks how many payments were made. On Zcash it mostly tracks what KIND of payments were made. A shielded transaction carries a zero-knowledge proof and a transparent one does not. That difference is large enough that the mix moves this line more than the count does.
So a rising line can mean more activity, or the same activity moving into the shielded pools. Read it alongside transactions per day: size up with count flat is a shift toward privacy, and both up together is real growth.
It is also the supply side of the fee market. Block space is what fees pay for, and ZIP-317 (a Zcash Improvement Proposal) prices a transaction by its logical actions rather than its bytes — so bytes and fees answer related questions with different units, and neither substitutes for the other.
